Bakersfield is the valley base for some of the best whitewater rafting in California, a two hour drive from Kernville to the northeast, the jumping off point for Kern River runs. Those with young ones along for the ride will find gentler stretches of river to consider below Lake Isabella, while experienced whitewater enthusiasts can attempt Class IV and V froth on the Upper Kern River.
