Barstow - Hiking

Thanks to its location in the Mojave Desert you can enjoy a desert hike anywhere around Barstow, though Afton Canyon and Rainbow Basin Natural Area are the hiking destinations of choice,  dramatic and beautiful in an arid Mojave sort of way. Keep in mind that it can get very hot during the day, and water can be hard to come by so be sure to prepare accordingly.

Afton Canyon Easy
Intermediate
Afton Canyon, as a protected area, is more open to foot travel than most other kinds of exploration.

Rainbow Basin Natural Area Easy
Intermediate
You'll want to bring plenty of water, but there's no nicer place for a desert hike than Rainbow Basin.
