Cascades Travel Information
The Cascades are an immense West Coast mountain range shaped by volcanic action that runs
from forest to high desert and back punctuated by rocky peaks. Beginning
in
California at the northern end of the Sierra Nevada, the range stretches up through Oregon, Washington and
the Canadian border. The section in California is known as the Shasta
Cascades, so named for the mountain which defines Northern California's
skyline.
The Shasta Cascades
are the rugged stars of a vast, largely undeveloped part of the state.
Outdoors enthusiasts can explore the rivers, mountains, and forests of
this
pristine area, from Redding to the border north, east, and
south. In addition to large lakes popular with houseboaters and
boaters there is excellent cross-country skiing and downhill skiing
locally in winter, and an abundance of hiking and biking
trails.
The Shasta Cascades are located in northern
California. For
