Mendocino County - Boating

There's plenty of open sea to sail off the coast of Mendocino County but massive Clear Lake is not far inland, a quick drive from county borders and a fine alternative to the Pacific when the seas are rough. This is the largest of California's natural freshwater lakes and surrounded by the fascinating Clear Lake Volcanic Field. Also of note is hill-framed Lake Mendocino, which is popular with boaters, water-skiers, hikers and campers during summer months. Those sticking to the coast can also consider a paddling trip up the Big River tidal estuary or around Albion's bay.
