Mojave Desert - Hiking

In Mojave National Preserve there are roughly seven established trails that range in length from less than a mile to 8-miles one way.  Backpackers can head off-trail into the wilderness to explore this rugged spot more thoroughly (no permits required) so long as they abide by the "leave no trace" dictum. Keep in mind whether out for an hour or a week that this is, after all, the desert, and hikers need to take precautions (and prepare) accordingly.

Afton Canyon Easy
Intermediate
Afton Canyon, as a protected area, is more open to foot travel than most other kinds of exploration.

Rainbow Basin Natural Area Easy
Intermediate
You'll want to bring plenty of water, but there's no nicer place for a desert hike than Rainbow Basin.
