The Pacific Coast Highway keeps car-based sight-seers close to the wild shore, but Monterey has shorter, more specific scenic drives also worth consideration whether you're in the market for a colorful patchwork quilt of rolling fields (try  Route 156) or looking for a change of pace along Route 68, which follows a stretch of the Salinas River.
