San Bernardino (pop. 200,000) marks the eastern end of the Inland Empire, the 50-mile corridor of urban area beyond Los Angeles across the Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The city may be best known for its annual events, including the Route 66 Rendezvous classic car festival, that attract visitors from around the country. Other major events are that citrus extravaganza, the National Orange Show, and the Western Regional Little League Championships.
The city's other claim to fame is being the hometown of McDonalds. In 1940, the McDonald brothers built the first of the chain here and while it no longer stands, there's a museum where it rested. The Heritage House and the Inland Empire Military Museum are two interesting sites covering history rather older than that of McDonalds, and the California Theater of Performing Arts is all about local culture and Broadway tours.
San Bernardino is also a convenient hub to many southwest California destinations such as Palm Springs, and the forested Santa Ana and San Bernardino mountains lay just outside its borders.
San Bernardino is located in southwest California, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles.
