San Jose - Hiking

There are dozens of hiking trails in the Santa Cruz mountains, which border the central Santa Clara valley on the west. The Monte Bello Open Space Preserve (650-691-1200) manages 25 preserve areas covering some 50,000 acres of the mountains, each of which contains one or more hiking trails. Castle Rock State Park (408-867-2952) has 32 miles of hiking trails through redwood and Douglas Fir forest.

A number of other trailheads can be found by driving Skyline Boulevard (Highway 35) which runs from Los Gatos in the south north to the San Mateo area.
