The North Fork of the Stanislaus is a favorite of many whitewater aficionados as it offers both magnificent scenery and very rough rapids. Originating high within the Central Sierra Crest Mountains, the North Fork challenges boaters with powerful class IV+ whitewater as it spills down the granite studded riverbed.

Best boated in mid-late spring, the North Fork meanders through the high pine and cedar forests of Stanislaus National Forest before cutting through Calaveras Big Trees State Park, where the mighty Sequoia Redwoods reign supreme. Day trips on this stretch are difficult and demanding, and previous whitewater experience and good physical fitness are suggested.
