The Hess Collection, winery and gallery, is situated in a grand milieu of mountains and greenery. The vines are kept on hills that roll between peaks and large patches of rich forest. The horizon is colored with a richness of green pines and fall leaves. The horizon, indeed, is a piece of artwork in itself and a visit to the winery is worth it just to glance out over the vineyards, but the horizon is only a backdrop to what you'll find inside. The founder of the winery, Donald Hess, has collected art for over forty-five years, and you'll find a portion of it in a free walk-through of the gallery. These are pieces both conventional and unconventional, media both painted and sculpted. Then, there is the wine-tasting itself. Choose four wines off of the Hess menu. These are wines with a touch of mountain air and volcanic soil. Chardonays and Cabernets, Zinfidals and Cuvees . . . you'll find a wide variety.
