Sierra Nevada - Hiking

There is no shortage of hiking trails in the Sierra Nevada, even beyond popular destinations like Yosemite National Park and Sequoia/King's Canyon National Park. The forests around Lake Tahoe, for example, have many miles of pedestrian friendly paths as well as more difficult treks; the long-distance Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) runs all the way up through the south end of the Sierra Nevada to the north end, linking walkers ultimately with Mexico at one end and the Cascade Range (and eventually Canada) at the other. Another popular long distance route is the John Muir Trail, a 211-mile-long footpath that shares 160 miles of its length with the PCT. Also part of this range is Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States, which can be summited by experienced hikers.
