Description

The newly renovated Chewalla Lake Recreation Area, located between Holly Springs and Tupelo, is North Mississippi’s premier setting for family fun and fishing. Chewalla Lake is for those want a natural, tranquil experience with those important amenities that make it easy to please the entire family.

The lake is feed by Chewalla Creek, a name derived from the Choctaw Indian word, "chihowa-la", meaning The Supreme Being. Visitors can see the Indian mound built by the area’s inhabitants more than a thousand years ago. Picnickers enjoy a cool view of this 260-acre lake, which is popular with fishermen and swimmers. The day use area includes a playground, swim area and beach, sand volleyball court, scenic trail along the lakeshore, an overlook, and new restroom facilities. A pavilion offers a covered picnic area overlooking the lake with electricity and large grills. It’s available for reservation and is the perfect site for your next gathering.

If you are planning a weekend or longer visit to fish, hike, nature watch, or tour nearby historic Holly Springs and Oxford, Chewalla Lake offers the most serene and restful campground in the area. Campers can choose from 27 campsites nestled in the woods. Hot showers and hook ups mean you can have modern conveniences even while you are "roughing it”!

Recently renovated to maximize fishing opportunities, Chewalla Lake has been featured by Bill Dance and Mid South Outdoors. Whether you are a serious angler or prefer to put a line in and relax, you will find the fishing is fine. Bring your boat or fish from one of our accessible fishing piers.

Convenient to Memphis, Holly Springs, Tupelo and all of North Mississippi off Highway 78, Chewalla Lake Recreation Area is sure to please the city slicker or the bona fide outdoor lover, whether you are looking for a weekend escape or a picturesque site for a family picnic.
