The Hole in the Ground trail is one of the Tahoe area’s finest choices for intermediate and advanced skill level mountain bikers.
The Hole in the Ground Trail winds past alpine lakes and hugs ridgelines up to 8000 feet in elevation. The climbs on Hole in the Ground are challenging and the descents are steep and studded with rocks, roots and ledges.
Views of the surrounding mountains are quite grand from Hole in the Ground Trail. Bikers should note that the trail is well marked but can become quite busy on weekends and holidays. A map is handy due to the number of side trails in the area.

Depends on fitness and skill level
Hole in the Ground Trail is multi-use and riders should understand and practice appropriate right of way protocol. Hikers and horses are a common sight here. Riders should also carry a first aid kit, bike repair kit and extra water and food. Riders should consider bringing extra clothing as the weather can fluctuate quickly when riding in higher elevations. A map will come in handy due to the number of trails in the area.
Take the Soda Springs exit off I-80. Go north on the Old Donner Pass road. Take a right on the first paved road. Look for the Lower Lola Montez Lake Trailhead ½ mile down. Start here. Ride can also be accessed from Boreal Ridge Ski Area.
