Description

The Ice Lake trail No. 1808 takes off approximately 2.8 miles up the West Fork of the Wallowa River trail No. 1820. It offers a spectacular view of the Matterhorn, Hurwal Divide, and Craig Mountain. The first mile of No. 1820 trail is fairly steep, taking in a series of switchbacks. At the top of the hill, take a look back for a wonderful view of Wallowa Lake and the valley. The trail flattens out for the next 1.8 miles and follows the river to the Ice Lake trail junction. From the Wallowa River and Ice Lake trail junction at 6,040 feet elevation, the trail gains 1,860 feet in 5.1 miles to Ice Lake. This trail provides excellent opportunities for viewing exotic alpine flowers, wildlife, geological formations, and spectacular scenery in all directions. Stop and fish for some tasty trout. The more adventurous can follow the trail around the north side of Ice Lake and climb the Matterhorn to an elevation of 9,845 feet. Water is readily available along this trail throughout the season.

NW Forest Passes are not required at Wallowa Lake Trailhead.

The trail is well maintained. It is signed at the trailhead and at all main junctions. The trail is difficult in places with very steep grade.

There are no campsites at the trailhead. Wallowa Lake State Park is nearby. Reservations are required at this campground during summer months. Camping at Ice Lake is limited due to terraine and restoration activities. Please check Eagle Cap Wilderness Regulations.
