Surrounded by the salty waters of the Salish Sea, the San Juan Islands, Washington, are quite literally, islands unto themselves. A world apart and a pace more peaceful than the bustling metropolitan Seattle area, these quiet islands draw a steady stream of tourists in season to spot migrating whales or spend some time sea kayaking. And while both are noteworthy pursuits, it would be negligent to pass through without spending any time on dry land.

Not only are ferry-accessible islands like San Juan and Orcas home to year-round residents but they also support communities rich in the arts. Friday Harbor, the commercial hub of the San Juan Islands, Washington, plays host to a surprisingly long list of artists’ studios, galleries and performing arts venues. Whether you’re in search of a fine art souvenir or more interested in a meander through the San Juan Islands Museum of Art (or the associated sculpture park), you’ll be granted a unique glimpse of what inspires creative types in these parts, beyond sea kayaks and orcas.

Interested in covering a little more territory? Consider acquiring a set of wheels, of the bicycle variety, and taking a spin around San Juan, Orcas or Lopez Island to get some inspiration of your own. You can rent bikes locally, or even book multi-day bike tours out of Seattle. San Juan Island has enough hills to give you a workout and a growing system of public trails, including some particularly scenic routes. Orcas Island is the only one with a real mountain, at 2,400 feet a surmountable, but steep obstacle. Lopez Island is the flattest and smallest of the bunch, and the first stop off the ferry from Anacortes. Our recommendation? A ride of 30 miles or so around the island’s outside edge, with rest breaks at particularly pretty overlooks.

For the best of both worlds, plan to spend a day at least soaking up island culture between peddling (and paddling) sessions. With an eye out for orcas, of course.
