Description

Traversing 28 miles of wooded hills and thick hallows clad with oak and pine trees, Sugar Camp Scenic Byway offers travelers myriads of dazzling views, complete with stream valleys, rocky bluffs, and majestic vistas, all of which perfectly characterize Missouri's Ozark hill country and the Mark Twain National Forest. This byway's wild scenery is a refreshing alternative to crowded highway travel.

The drive includes recreational opportunities everyone can enjoy, such as the celebrated Roaring River State Park, the geographic wonders of Onyx Cave, and the ever-popular Table Rock Lake. Roaring River State Park has long been known for its fine trout fishing. Over ten miles of hiking trails meander among hardwood forests and through narrow valleys. Famous for its good trout supply and fishing hatchery, Roaring River Spring is every angler's dreams come true. The park abounds in campsites and lodges, cabin or inn accommodations, making this a perfect vacation destination. Mark Twain National Forest's Onyx Cave on Forest Road 197 treats travelers to a geographic marvel of nature sure to impress younger and older tourists alike. Visitors explore Onyx Cave on a short and moderately challenging hiking loop. Its astounding features and unique formations make this cavern a year-round favorite. Table Rock Lake is a great favorite among the local residents. As the eastern part of the byway passes a few miles away from the western end of the lake, its cooling waters and radiant scenery attract more than campers and sportspeople. The lake bursts with outdoor recreation activities. Visitors partake any number of water sports, ranging from boating to diving. The lake region also hosts miles of hiking trails where guests appreciate the serenity of this man-made lake.

Travelers can find comfort and relaxation along Sugar Camp Scenic Byway as they pass through verdant landscapes full of alluring vistas. The resplendent views combined with its abounding recreational opportunities have already made this byway a favorite spot with many travelers.
