Description
Originally built in 1885, the Woodland Opera House burnt down in the 1892 fire that destroyed much of Woodland. Not to be discouraged, residents rebuilt the theater, using recovered bricks where possible, and it reopened in 1896. Over 300 touring companies visited the Opera house, regaling audiences with outstanding performances. Unfortunately, due to financial entanglements the theater closed its doors in 1913. It remained boarded up and abandoned until a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 1989 brought this classic theater back to life. Now visitors can enjoy performances throughout the year in comfort.
The Woodland Opera House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is both a California Historical Landmark and State Historical Park. Tours of this historic building are given on Tuesdays from noon to 4pm.
