Description

Clear Lake is California’s largest natural freshwater lake. It is ancient; geologists estimate it is nearly 500,000 years old, making it possibly the oldest lake in North America. Clear Lake is within the Clear Lake Volcanic Field and the volcanoes gathered around its south end are also ancient, the most famous being Mount Konocti (don’t worry, though – Mount Konocti’s last eruption was 10,000 years ago).

The lake has no less than 100 miles of shoreline and draws everyone from watersports enthusiasts to sightseers. Launch a boat from one of eleven ramps or rent a boat if you don’t have one. The fisherman will find plenty of largemouth bass here; in fact, Clear Lake has been called the "Bass Capital of the West."

Clear Lake State Park surrounds the lake and lets nature-enthusiasts land based enjoy an alternative approach to the area. The Indian Nature Trail is a well-known hiking trail and historical as well. It threads through a site that was once home to a Pomo village. And birders may well find nesting waterfowl on these protected shores.
