Feed Your Inner Artist at Marin’s May Events

Description

The job of an artist is to lead by inspiration—to see the invisible, to imagine the impossible. As part of its history, culture and community, Marin County nurtures this sentiment on several fronts.

Throughout May, visitors to Marin County can experience the inspiring inertia that continues to push the local arts scene forward to exciting and unfamiliar places. From edible art and poetry to hands-on learning from the pros, however you get inspired, you can find it in Marin County this May.

Get inked at a printmaking class

For those interested in an immersive and intimate art experience, check out ink.paper.plate in Point Reyes Station. It’s both a working studio for local artist Sirima Sataman and a unique workshop space for visiting artists and curious art enthusiasts alike.

Monday through Friday, shop Sataman’s collection of letterpress stationery, silk-screened textiles and fine art. On the weekends, Sataman offers creative workshops for all skill levels. There are full- and half-day workshops available, as well as special events like the Ink and Drink Printmaking Social on May 15 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. It’s a chance to mingle with fellow artists, share stories and learn more about classic printing techniques.

Eat your heart out with poetry and performance

If edible art is of more interest, you definitely won’t want to miss Eat My Heart Out Supper Club on May 16 from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Peace Barn in Bolinas. Originally from Brooklyn, the traveling supper club is one part performance art and two parts local cuisine, all whipped up with a dash of whimsy.

Local writers, storytellers, poets and rappers will perform pieces inspired by the menu—dramatizing the food with oral metaphor and complexity. Guests sit family style with time to chat between courses.

Chef Matt Elias, working with chef David Cook, will create five courses of edible art, using locally sourced ingredients produced by Marin farmers and artisans. Tickets are limited and expected to sell out, so don’t miss your chance to inspire your taste buds, as well as your spirit, at this unforgettable meal.

Explore world-class art and architecture

To understand Marin’s contribution to the arts, as well as learn more about its fascinating history, join the Marin Convention & Visitors Bureau for the guided Art & Culture Tour on May 20 from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This full day is packed with artistic points of interest, and expert docent testimony. The day begins with a look at the world-famous Civic Center, built by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Other venues include the Falkirk Cultural Center and Smith Rafael Film Center. Register for tickets on sale now for $49 (member price) and $59 (non-member price).

See live demonstrations and discover original work

On Memorial Day weekend, Point Reyes Open Studios Group will host a local exhibit of collections from West Marin’s finest sculptors, photographers, potters, painters, printmakers and woodworkers.

During the long weekend, visitors can meet artists, discover original work, explore unique studio spaces and see live demonstrations of complex, craft techniques. This free event is self-guided so you can meander at your leisure while surrounded by gardens and sweeping views of Tomales Bay.

Marin County has a bit of inspiration for everyone. Feed your creative spirit in Marin County this May.
