This trail runs adjacent to the 44,560 acre Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness Area that is part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Devil’s Peak Lookout is located along its southern segment. This trail runs along Hunchback Ridge that says forested along its length. When combined with part of Salmon River Trail, Kinzel Lake Trail and Green Canyon Trail, a longer loop route can be made. When starting from Zigzag, this trail climbs steeply for just over 2 miles gaining almost 2000 feet to a viewpoint. From this point the trail follows near the ridgeline of Hunchback itself. Approximately 1 ½ mile before its end at Sherburn Road, Devil’s Peak Lookout is located. Some segments of the trail are primitive with minimal tread surface and are almost a scramble.

Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: Devil’s Peak Lookout has been out of service for over 25 years but is open to the public. ?? The lookout is kept unlocked at all times. There is no fee or reservation system to visit the lookout. ?? A water source is located approximately 300 yards north of the lookout on the north side of Hunchback Trail. This water source can dry up in late summer. ?? There is no outhouse. Go at least 200 feet from the lookout, keeping away from any water sources and dig a 6-8” cat hole. ??
