Description

This trail enters the 47,160-acre Mt Hood Wilderness Area part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Ramona Falls itself is a jewel drawing visitors to the area. The Sandy River, a designated Wild and Scenic River, is a dramatic example of the forces that a glacial fed river can bring forth to change the landscape. Physical signs of a volcanic debris flow from over 200 years ago are evident where the trail is near the Sandy River. Most visitors access this trail from Ramona Falls Trailhead. The distance round trip for this point is 7 miles. From this trailhead, visitors take the Sandy River Trail one mile eastward to where it crosses the Sandy River. As footbridge is put in place here each spring and removed in the fall. Horses ford. Approximately ¼ mile after the bridge, visitors will come to the Ramona Falls "loop” itself. (The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail No. 2000 overlaps with Ramona Falls for a couple miles in this area.) Equestrians going to Ramona Falls will stay on the southern side of the loop that goes along above the Sandy River. Hikers can choose which way to do the loop. It is about the same distance either way. Overall the route is a gentle climb gaining 1000’ over the 3.5 miles to the falls.

Regulations & Leave No Trace Information: ?? Wilderness Permits are required between May 15 and Oct 15, but are free and self-issuing at a permit box station along the trail. ?? Group size is limited to 12. On trails that allow stock, stock are counted in the group size. For example, 3 people each riding their own horse plus a spare horse in the group for packing would make a group of 7. ?? Unproccessed livestock feed is prohibited, preventing non-native plant spread. ?? No fires or camping within 500 feet of Ramona Falls.

Leave No Trace ?? Plan Ahead and Prepare – do you have your 10 essentials? ?? Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces – Use existing sites. Stay off around the falls. ?? Dispose of Waste Properly – Pack out all food scrapes – even apple cores ?? Leave What You Find – leave vegetation in place ?? Minimize Campfire Impacts – use existing rings, burn only small, down and dead wood ?? Respect Wildlife – even a small amount of human food can start to habituate animals. ?? Be Considerate of Other Visitors – give other the chance to hear the quiet.
