Description

The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is a rare thing - a delta narrow where it meets the ocean and far, far wider inland. (Most deltas are the opposite - wide against the shore and narrow inland). The delta is formed primarily by the forced convergence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers through the Carquinez Strait. However, many, many natural and man-made channels are also drawn into the strait before they touch the ocean, which makes the delta truly immense.

The delta is not just a geological curiosity, though. The soil is so rich that certain crops grow exceptionally well. The wetlands, as well as the islands between channels, draw wildlife of all sorts.

The delta also draws people seeking water recreation. With numerous islands and seemingly endless shoreline, it would be easy to spend hours here just exploring. In the summer, boaters and water-skiers take to the water while winter brings a devoted fishing following to the shore. Salmon, American Shad, Striped Bass and Sturgeon are just a few of the species here in abundance.
