Scenic drives in some mountain ranges may be more predictable than these - green vistas, bald peaks, acres upon acres of wild woods. Not that the Cascade Mountains lack these elements, but the youth of the range means that some of its sudden vistas are nothing like the somewhat tame slopes of older mountains. The Modoc Volcanic Scenic Byway has Mount Shasta as its center, but that peak is fronted by bizarre lava formations. State of Jefferson Scenic Byway has stretches of high desert. The Emigrant Trail connects closer to Mount Shasta and its own volcanic landscape surrounding.
