Many of Eureka's attractions are natural with forests and wildlife sanctuaries crowding close to the city itself. A state park of redwoods is just south, Redwood National Park lies to the north and a stone's throw away are lovely, wild beaches. Within the city is Sequoia Park Zoo and several diversionary museums, which range in theme from the natural world to fine art and history. The atmospheric town of Ferndale, 30 away minutes by car, is ranked a historic landmark for its Victorian architecture and makes for an easy day-trip. Completely off the beaten path is the "Lost Coast" (which stretches away south of Ferndale), the most dramatic and undeveloped stretch of the California shore - but this comes with a price - roads, where they exist, are rough though the reward for the area's inaccessibility is the absence of crowds and unforgettable scenery.
