Certainly, Barstow is notable as a historic hub for cars and trains and mules and the local museums reflect its past and present significance in transportation. What may make Barstow fascinating to the tourist, however, is a mixture of ghost towns, archaeological sites and incredible natural attractions.
The former mining site, Calico Ghost Town, is worth a visit, and the Calico Early Man Site nearby is one of the more exciting archaeological sites in the nation. Dry lakes and dramatic canyons and basins ask to be hiked, and the sudden greenery of the Amargosa River is a place to relax.
