Palm Springs - Hiking

The San Jacinto Mountains, which virtually edge Palm Sprigs,  offer a number of hiking trails for those seeking to beat the heat at higher elevations. Fascinating glimpses into the history of the area can be had at Indian Canyons, former home of the Agua Caliente tribe.

Andreas Canyon Easy
1.5 miles Less than an hour
This quick, easy hike lets you experience the Indian Canyons without working your legs too hard.

Araby Trail Intermediate
6 miles 2-3 hours
Not only is this trail a good work out, threading through a shallow mountain pass as it does, but it passes under famous celebrity homes, including Bob Hope's.

Art Smith Trail Difficult
16 miles 8 hours
The scenery is as intense as the hike, all sudden canyons and palm oases.

Asbestos Trail Intermediate
2-3 hours
Asbestos Trail provides a terrific vantage to look out over the Santa Rosa Mountains from.

Bear Ridge Difficult
3-4 hours
Climb Bear Ridge into Sheep Mountain's foothills - and kick back under a palm tree. You'll need the rest.

Big Morongo Canyon Intermediate
6 miles 2-3 hours
Big Morongo Canyon may be in the middle of the desert, but it's a green oasis that attracts flocks of birds.

Black Mountain Difficult
7 miles 3-4 hours
Black Mountain is, actually, very green. The difficult hike gives you views well worth the leg-burn.

Boo Hoff Trail Difficult
6-8 hours
The Salton Sea is visible from the heights of this fiercely tough trail.

Bulleye Rock at Indian Canyons Difficult
11 miles 6-8 hours
This exhaustingly long and steep, but beautiful, hike takes you to a rock that, indeed, looks like a bullseye.

Bump and Grind Trail Intermediate
4 miles 2-3 hours
Although not as lonely as some other trails in the Palm Springs area, the scenery is no less gorgeous for that.

Cactus Springs Trail Intermediate
Difficult
5-9 miles 5 hours
Keep an eye out for Horsethief Creek, an abandoned mine, as you trek upward toward Cactus Spring.

Calcite Canyon Intermediate
4 miles 2-3 hours
The Calcite Canyon is formed of sandstone and calcite crystals together, which makes for some truly unusual rock formations.

Caramba Falls Difficult
14 miles 8-10 hours
Caramba Falls is an intimidating hike, extremely difficult and extremely long.

Coachella Valley Preserve Easy
Intermediate
2 miles 1 hour
This is the only place in the world where the Coachella Valley fringe-tailed lizard exists. Watch for the reptile as you stroll this flat, easy desert route.

Cornell Peak Saddle Intermediate
Difficult
7 miles 6-8 hours
Take the Tramway up to Mount San Jacinto's peak and begin this truly alpine experience - in the middle of the desert.

Deer Springs Trail to San Jacinto Peak Difficult
18 miles Overnight
This is a hike meant to be a backpacking trip - you'll want to take this 18 mile monster overnight. The views from the high slopes of the San Jacinto Mountains are truly awe-inspiring, however.

Deer Springs Trail to Strawberry Cienaga Difficult
11 miles 8 hours
How often do you find a marsh in Southern California? This patch of wetland on Mount San Jacinto is unusual and beautiful.

Deer Springs Trail to Suicide Rock Intermediate
Difficult
11 miles 8 hours
This is a long, if scenically glorious, trek up San Jacinto Mountain's southwest side.
